Summary

Step 1 of bringing music into /dev/null (#1380): a member can link a Last.fm account, and anyone can ask what that member is listening to right now. This PR is backend only, behind a new now_playing feature switch that's off by default, so nothing changes for anyone until the rest ships.

Why Last.fm and not Spotify

  • Connecting accounts: Spotify apps in development mode allow 5 allowlisted users, and the app owner needs Premium. Lifting that ("extended quota") needs an organization with a launched service and 250k+ monthly active users.
  • Playlists: since February 2026, development mode only returns a playlist's tracks to its owner or collaborators.
  • Playback: full tracks in the browser need the Web Playback SDK. Every listener needs Premium and their own Spotify login, the SDK isn't for commercial use without Spotify's written approval, and the audio is DRM-protected, so Winamp's visualizer and equalizer couldn't touch it.
  • Last.fm needs one API key and a username, with no per-user cap. Spotify scrobbles to Last.fm natively, so Spotify listeners are covered, as are Apple Music, YouTube Music and desktop players (Winamp included).

Roadmap

  1. This PR: link a Last.fm account and read the track playing now (backend, switched off).
  2. Show "♫ Artist – Song" on profiles, hover cards and Remotes, with a setting to link and unlink; update the privacy page and knowledge base; switch it on.
  3. The Winamp player itself (Webamp, Idea: Winamp in /dev/null, as an Easter egg #1380), with its keyboard shortcuts.
  4. Skins: pick one from the Winamp Skin Museum or upload a .wsz, saved per member.
  5. A playlist on the profile that visitors can play: Spotify playlists through Spotify's own embed, and openly licensed audio that Winamp plays directly.

Changes

  • users.lastfm_username, hidden from every public payload and included in the data export.
  • PUT/DELETE settings/now-playing links and unlinks the account. Linking checks the username's format and that Last.fm knows it (user.getInfo), refuses while the switch is off, is blocked during a timeout, and is limited to 10 a minute, since each attempt calls Last.fm.
  • GET @{handle}/now-playing returns {"track": {"artist", "title", "album", "url"} | null} from user.getRecentTracks. It's cached for 30 s per username (5 min after a failure), has its own limit of 60 a minute, is null across a block or while the switch is off, and is sent with Cache-Control: no-store, private, since the answer depends on who's asking.
  • LastFmProvider, with an HTTP implementation and a null one for local and testing, like the other providers. An error body counts as a failure even when Last.fm answers 200, and only Last.fm's own error 6 means an account doesn't exist. Any other 404, or an answer without the account, is a failed lookup. Production needs LASTFM_API_KEY.
  • A now playing row on Operations → Features.

Validation

Local, on macOS with PHP 8.5, Postgres 17 and Node 24 (CI hasn't run yet):

  • composer test:lint, composer test:types: pass.
  • composer test:type-coverage: 100%.
  • composer test:unit: 5,825 Pest tests pass at 100% coverage; 291 Node unit tests pass. Twice, a parallel run failed two Api/CommitSearchControllerTest cases, which aren't touched here; that file passes alone (3 out of 3), and the full rerun passed.
  • Locally, as an admin: the now playing row shows switched off on Operations → Features. Linking is refused while it's off; with it on, a bad username is rejected, a good one links, GET /@handle/now-playing returns {"track":null} from the null provider, the hover card JSON doesn't include the username, and unlinking clears it.
  • No device testing: nothing member-facing changed.

Independent review

Fresh read-only Claude subagent, run three times. On base f01e630a, the first pass was FAIL because linking had no rate limit. That's fixed, along with timeout blocking, dropping album art and stricter cache TTL tests. Re-review: CODE PASS, with nits left: a test pinning the case-insensitive cache key, a guest-IP test for the now-playing limit, and \z instead of $ in the username regex (trailing newlines are already trimmed). After rebasing onto 03a95b7b (#1458), the patch is unchanged (git range-diff), and a fresh review of head 258bd86d (tree f0c8d2ea) found no interaction with the live updates: the username stays hidden from live props and broadcasts. That review gave CODE PASS. It also noted that the link and unlink actions don't send UsersUpdated. Nothing shows the username or track yet, so that belongs with step 2's UI. CodeRabbit then asked for no-store on the now-playing response; a fresh review of head 66425006 (tree 60b0ed6b) gave CODE PASS with no findings. CodeRabbit's next review asked to treat Last.fm error bodies sent with HTTP 200 as failures, and to export a non-null username in the export test. Both are done; a fresh review of head 23b17e5f (tree 9326fd94) gave CODE PASS with no findings. Rebased onto 74f91e2e (#1477, which touches only suggestions and who-to-follow), the patch is unchanged (git range-diff). A fresh review of head 0fd85372 found no interaction and gave CODE PASS. CodeRabbit then asked that only error 6, not any 404, mean a missing account; a fresh review of head ed1bce90 (tree daf1d8d0) gave CODE PASS with no findings. CodeRabbit then asked that a 200 without the account count as a failed lookup too; a fresh review of head 24806720 (tree d86d37e1) gave CODE PASS with no findings. Rebased onto 56466de6 (#1480) and then 84c5496a, both front-end only, the patch is unchanged (git range-diff). A fresh review of head a1efc5ac gave CODE PASS. Visual review: not applicable beyond the one admin label row.

Limitations

  • Last.fm's API terms limit use to non-commercial purposes, ask for links back to Last.fm, and say public pages using the API need Last.fm's approval. Worth confirming with Last.fm before the switch goes on.
  • Album art isn't covered by those terms, so it's left out.
  • Not run against the live Last.fm API (no key locally); the provider tests fake responses shaped like Last.fm's JSON.
  • Members who hide their recent listening on Last.fm always show nothing playing.
  • Last.fm takes its API key in the query string, so outgoing-request monitoring (e.g. Nightwatch) would record the key and the linked username.
  • No global cap on Last.fm calls beyond the per-username cache; worth watching against Last.fm's per-IP limit when the switch goes on.

Merge Risk: Low · previous review ed1bc

An unexpected Last.fm response can mislead members trying to link an account. The change is otherwise mergeable with this bounded issue acknowledged.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to ed1bc

The integration is disabled by default, account changes are restricted to the signed-in member, and public responses are limited to track metadata. No material security defect was established in the inspected flow. Shared API capacity and concurrent-request behavior remain deployment considerations before enabling the feature.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Once enabled, unauthenticated callers can trigger retrieval of linked members’ public track metadata. The shared application API key, external API capacity, cache, and synchronous request workers are the principal shared resources exposed through this flow; callers do not choose the initial outbound host.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Settings mutations operate on the authenticated user rather than a client-selected target user. Username validation restricts input before external lookup. Public lookups are limited to 60 requests per minute per authenticated user or guest IP, and link attempts to ten per minute per user. Feature administration requires an administrator.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Concurrent cache misses may duplicate outbound work, and a lookup already in progress may complete after an association or visibility change. Subsequent requests reapply blocking, username, and feature checks before reading the shared cache. Cache retention alone therefore does not establish continued access after unlinking or blocking, and no strict cancellation or instantaneous revocation contract was demonstrated.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Before broad enablement, consider coalescing concurrent lookups and applying a shared outbound budget appropriate to the Last.fm key. These would strengthen capacity containment beyond the existing per-viewer throttles; API-key exhaustion was not demonstrated.

Explanation

The title "feat: read what members are listening to from Last.fm" matches the main change. The PR adds backend support for linking a Last.fm account and reading a member's current track, behind a now_playing feature switch that is off by default. The title is short, specific, and follows a conventional commit style. It does not cover every detail, such as the rate limits, caching, or the Operations feature row, which is expected.

Treat Last.fm error payloads on HTTP 200 as failures.

throw() raises only on HTTP error statuses. Last.fm can return an error payload with HTTP 200, as the existing error => 6 test case shows. Such a response does not raise, so the callers handle it incorrectly:

  • exists() treats any error other than 6 as a missing account. A temporary outage can therefore show "There is no Last.fm account with that username."
  • nowPlaying() treats the error as an empty track. NowPlayingQuery caches that result for 30 seconds instead of the 5-minute failure TTL.

Treat any non-6 error payload as a provider failure. Keep code 6 as the not-found case.

I think this is great. However, would it be possible to select a specific song/playlist to showcase on your profile instead of "now playing"?

Seeing as we need this to be Last.fm, I think it would be more useful to explicitly select a track to put on your profile (MySpace style) than to show what's currently playing (most people are not streaming their listening on last.fm)

@paulinevos

Just realized: my request would probably require OAuth. Documented for last.fm under section 3 here: https://www.last.fm/api/authspec

@paulinevos Agreed. Most people don't scrobble, so a song you pick would show up on far more profiles than a "now playing" line.

Picking a song doesn't need OAuth, though. Last.fm's web auth only proves an account is yours or lets an app act for you. Searching tracks (track.search) and reading someone's loved tracks work with the site's API key alone.

The catch is that Last.fm has no audio: a song picked through it would be a title and a link, not something visitors can play. For the MySpace feel I'd use Spotify's embed player instead. What ruled Spotify out was its Web API (5 users per app). The embed needs no API key, app or login on our side: you paste a Spotify link to a song, album or playlist, and your profile shows Spotify's player. Visitors signed in to Spotify hear full tracks; everyone else hears 30-second previews. YouTube or SoundCloud links could work the same way later.

If that sounds right, I'll rework this PR into "pick a song for your profile": a checked Spotify link saved on your profile, still backend only and behind the switch, with Last.fm and now playing dropped. That also takes Last.fm's terms (their approval for public pages) off the table. When the UI comes, the player would only load once a visitor presses play, so opening a profile doesn't load Spotify and its cookies.

@raz-iacob I mean... that would discard the entire concept of the Winamp player. The Winamp player is what makes this concept so cool.

@paulinevos Agreed, the Winamp player is what makes this, and it's why I started down this road in the first place. I'll rethink the plan around the player and come back with it.

Closing this in favour of #1490, as discussed above: the Winamp player comes first. Winamp needs audio it can actually play, and Last.fm has none, so Last.fm and "now playing" are dropped.

#1490 opens a Winamp player from search that keeps playing across pages, and lets members share an Audius playlist that anyone can play in Winamp from their profile. Skins, Winamp's keyboard shortcuts and more playlist sources come next.
